I had made it to the final callbacks of HAIR auditions in Los Angeles and San Francisco in
1969, but wasn't cast. So when I went to München to visit a friend in 1970, I stopped in to
see the local production of the show. Turns out Gina Harding, whom I'd known from the L.A.
cast, was directing. She saw me and said, "James! Wanna be in HAIR?" So I bared body & soul—
in German!—for several weeks before becoming disillusioned with backstage politics and
backbiting and the parsimonious producer. Future '70s pop diva Donna Summer was also
in the cast at the time.
