LADY OF THE GRAMOPHONE

ABOUT INSPIRATION: After my first official European tour in 1971, I settled in Copenhagen. I borrowed a friend's record player to fill the void, and another friend loaned me her copy of Joni Mitchell's newest LP, Blue. I played it repeatedly, as it seemed to speak directly to me. In no time I had found a way to respond.

Lady of the gramophone
You'll never know what you have done
You turned my insides all about
You made me bring my paper out
Paper and pen
And I'm writing again

You sing your song so sweet and pure
I've lived those lines, I am quite sure
Now and again, I look up and grin
As though your voice were my best friend
Sit on the floor
And I'm writing once more

BRIDGE
Now, where songs come from and where they go
I'm not sure I really know
They seem to come at funny times
Like now, in answer to your lines

Lady of the phonograph
You made me cry, you made me laugh
Your music swims about my soul
It makes me rock, it makes me roll
It didn't take long
And I've finished your song

BRIDGE
Now, where songs come from and where they go
I'm not sure I want to know
They seem to come at funny times
Like now, in answer to your lines
