Living on Borrowed Time

Evolution revolution
Carousel sublime
The spiral spins beyond control
Devoid of reason or rhyme
Prostrate ‘fore the throne of God
Still dripping from the slime
Two steps forward, one step back
In our dance with the divine
Poised with peak potential
Or pitifully past our prime?
As we struggle to differentiate
The criminal from the crime

REFRAIN

We’re skatin’ on thin ice
Standing on shaky ground
Living on borrowed time
Living on borrowed time

Planetary adversaries
Randomly unkind
From tribal insecurities
The blinded leading the blind
Exploiting fears to build careers
Each slight repaid in kind
The rulers sip the golden nectar
The ruled nibble the rind
Creation’s coronation
Or to compost heap consigned?
As we struggle to understand our role
In this construct of the mind

REFRAIN

We’re skatin’ on thin ice
Standing on shaky ground
Living on borrowed time
Living on borrowed time

Skatin’, standin’
Living on borrowed time
Living on borrowed time
